I first came to the Family Room on a day my one year old was driving me crazy. From the moment we walked in the door she was delightfully busy playing with other kids, and I breathed a huge sigh of relief. It was so novel to get to sit in one place and talk to adults after months of being cooped up in the house. Staff welcomed me with open arms, asked me about projects besides raising my kid, offered suggestions about the difficulties we were having with sleep and helped me connect with other parents so that within our first week there I had friendships to look forward to each time I came.
I didn’t know I needed the Family Room until I got there, but it has made all the difference in my growing confidence as a parent, and growing enjoyment of my daughter. I don’t feel lost anymore when I think of myself as a mom–I know that when I hit a challenge I feel I can’t meet, I have a community to turn to.
