On October 22, 2015 it was made known that the VNA of Chittenden County would be laying off three veteran staff members of the Janet S. Munt VNA Family Room, effective November 3, 2015. This devastating reduction in staff lead to reduced programming, and a stressful atmosphere in a place that is a safe haven to many. Parents and community members organized as the “Family Room Family” to request restoration of staff and programming, and worked through spring 2016 raise just over $70,000. This enabled the return of two staff members on a temporary basis.
In March 2016, the VNA announced the Family Room would be exiting the VNA and the Family Room Family advocated for parent, staff and community representation on the transition team tasked with finding a new organizational home for the Family Room. The transition team began meeting in June 2016 and requested proposals from potential host organizations. When no proposals materialized, the Family Room Family put forth a proposal for a stand-alone parent child center, which the transition team is now working to strengthen before presenting it to the VNA Board.
A volunteer board including several Family Room parents and community members skilled in non-profit management have taken the helm, and the Janet S. Munt Family Room will begin a new chapter as an independent organization on July 1, 2017.
